Large-Scale Wind Auto-Production Project

Large-Scale Wind Auto-Production Project

Galetech delivered Ireland’s first large-scale wind auto-production project, designed to provide renewable electricity directly to a major industrial client in County Cork.
The project integrates two Enercon E-82 wind turbines operating under a behind-the-meter structure, enabling the client to significantly reduce exposure to electricity price volatility while lowering carbon emissions. The development was led through feasibility, planning, funding support, procurement, and full project execution.

Challenge

Key challenges associated with the project included:
Developing Ireland’s first large-scale wind auto-production model for an industrial client
Structuring commercial arrangements to allow on-site renewable electricity supply through a behind-the-meter PPA
Managing grid and market mechanisms to enable export of surplus generation
Delivering a financially viable project while supporting grant funding and commercial structuring

Solution

- Galetech implemented a structured development and funding strategy to ensure successful project delivery:
- Detailed feasibility and energy demand analysis to optimise turbine capacity relative to site consumption
- Development of a hybrid commercial model, combining on-site consumption with export under a REFIT PPA
- Strategic use of SEAI grant funding mechanisms to support project economics
- Integrated project management and delivery oversight from development through construction
- Long-term operations and maintenance services to ensure reliable asset performance

Outcome

Delivery of Ireland’s first large-scale wind auto-production project
- Installation of two Enercon E-82 turbines providing 4.1 MW total capacity
- Generation of approximately 10 GWh of renewable electricity annually
- Approximately 70% of electricity consumed on-site, supplying ~30% of the client’s total electricity demand
- Surplus electricity exported and sold into the market through REFIT PPA arrangements
- Significant energy cost savings and reduced exposure to electricity price volatility.
