Welsh Water - Welsh Water (BTM Wind Programme)
Galetech Energy Services (GES) is providing client-side development and planning management support for Welsh Water’s behind-the-meter (BTM) wind generation programme across multiple operational sites in Wales.
Client
Welsh Water
Capacity
1MW
Location
Wales, UK
Architect

Challenge
The Welsh Water BTM wind programme presents several key development challenges:
Identifying viable wind development opportunities across multiple operational infrastructure sites
Managing planning and environmental constraints associated with distributed turbine development
Aligning renewable generation with site-specific electricity demand profiles
Delivering projects that support Welsh Water’s long-term decarbonisation and energy resilience goals

Solution
GES implemented a structured multi-site development approach to support programme delivery:
Strategic screening of over 15 sites to assess technical, environmental and planning viability
Early-stage constraint mapping and feasibility analysis to prioritise high-potential sites
Development of a phased pipeline of projects, progressing viable sites toward planning
Provision of client-side programme management to coordinate technical studies and development activities

Outcome
15+ sites assessed for behind-the-meter wind viability
8 sites progressed to pre-planning stage
3 sites advancing to full planning applications for approximately 1 MW turbines
Establishment of a scalable wind generation pipeline supporting Welsh Water’s renewable energy strategy
Programme contributing to Welsh Water’s commitment to achieve net zero by 2040
