On World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we’re proud to mark an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to safety across Galetech Group. This year, we’ve become an Associate Member of SafetyOn, supporting the continued development of health and safety standards across the onshore wind industry. It’s a meaningful milestone - but it also reflects a broader focus on safety that we’ve been building over recent weeks.

In the lead-up to today, we ran a dedicated Hands & Feet Focus Week across Galetech Operations - highlighting one of the most common causes of injury in our sector and, more importantly, how we can prevent it.

Why Hand and Foot Safety Matters in the Wind Industry

Safety data across the renewable energy and wind sector continues to show a clear trend: hand and foot injuries remain among the most frequent workplace incidents.

Looking at both our own operations and wider industry insights:

  • Hands are consistently the #1 most frequently injured body part

  • Many injuries involve pinch points, moving equipment, or stored energy

  • A large proportion of incidents occur during routine or familiar tasks

Industry figures reinforce this. In Q1 2025, 7 out of 8 lost-time injuries (LTIs) in European wind involved hands or feet.

What We Learned: The Pattern Behind Injuries

During Hands & Feet Focus Week, we examined incidents across our operations and identified three recurring causes that appear time and again:

Three safety incident causes: 1. Hand in wrong place. 2. Uncontrolled movement. 3. Job changed but people carried on.

The “Line of Fire” - A Simple Way to Think About Risk

A key concept we reinforced throughout the week is the “Line of Fire.”

You are in the line of fire when your hands or feet are exposed to a force they cannot withstand - whether that’s:

  • Stored hydraulic or mechanical energy

  • Dropped or swinging loads

  • Crushing or pinch points between objects

It’s a simple but powerful mindset shift. Before acting, pause and ask:

“If something moves, shifts, drops, or releases right now - where are my hands?”

Turning Awareness into Safer Behaviours

Raising awareness is only part of the solution. The real impact comes from consistent, practical actions on site.

Throughout the campaign, we reinforced key safety behaviours:

  • Stop and identify pinch points before starting any task

  • Use tools and mechanical aids instead of hands wherever possible

  • Don’t force awkward or misaligned tasks - pause and reassess

  • Check terrain and housekeeping to reduce slips, trips, and foot hazards

These are simple steps, but they play a critical role in reducing risk across wind farm operations, maintenance, and construction activities.

Strengthening Industry Collaboration Through SafetyOn

Our new role as an Associate Member of SafetyOn strengthens our ability to contribute to - and learn from - industry-wide safety initiatives.

As Garry Bradford, Head of EHS at Galetech Group, explains:

"SafetyOn brings together industry leaders to drive improvements in health and safety performance across the onshore wind sector. Through best practice guidance, safety-by-design initiatives, and collaboration with regulators, it provides a valuable platform to strengthen how we manage risk and protect our teams. As associate members, we’ve already engaged in a number of SafetyOn initiatives, including recent workshops focused on implementing CDM 2015 in operational environments. Being part of this network aligns strongly with our commitment to continuous improvement in safety."

A Simple Ask That Makes a Big Difference

As part of Hands & Feet Focus Week, we encouraged one simple action:

Report one hand or foot hazard you would previously have walked past.

Because in safety, small actions matter. Every reported hazard, every conversation, and every pause to reassess contributes to preventing the next injury.

Looking Ahead: Keeping Safety at the Centre of What We Do

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an opportunity to reflect - but more importantly, to reinforce our commitment moving forward.

At Galetech Group, we will continue to:

  • Focus on high-risk injury trends, including hand and foot safety

  • Engage our teams through practical, real-world safety campaigns

  • Collaborate with industry partners like SafetyOn to raise standards across the sector

Because at the end of the day, the goal is simple:

Everyone goes home safe - with the same hands and feet they arrived with.

Safety first. Always. 💚
