Why is a substation necessary?

The Substation is needed to connect Cush Wind Farm to the national grid. It will help improve the reliability and security of electricity supply and support future energy needs.

A typical 110kV substation occupies approximately 3.5 acres of land

What will it look like?

The substation will be a fenced compound containing transformers, cables and support structures. It will be relatively low in height and can be screened with fencing or planting.

How will public consultation take place?

In accordance with best practice, we will be holding a series of public information events that will be advertised. There will be a dedicated project website that will be updated on an ongoing basis. Members of the consultation team will call door-to-door within a 1km radius of the proposed development before a planning application will be submitted so that local people can ask questions and raise any concerns. The project and consultation team will also hold public clinics before a planning application is submitted ensuring you are kept updated to final design stage.

Cush Wind Farm Substation & Grid Connection

Cush Wind Farm is developing plans for a 110kV transmission substation and grid connection in the townlans of Boolinarig Big, Ross, Glenns and Ballaghanoher, Co. Offaly.

The proposed Cush substation and grid connection will enable Cush Wind farm to export renewable electricity to the national grid. This will support Ireland's renewable energy targets, help address climate change, and enhance energy security and sustainability.

Under the Government's Climate Action Plan 2023, Ireland is targeting 80% renewable electricity by 2030 to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and strenghen energy supply, and Cush Wind Farm will contribute to achieving this goal.

Progression of the Cush Substation has been temporarily delayed due to technical matters that are currently being addressed.

Our Community Liaison Officer will continue to keep the local community informed and will be in contact when the project is ready to be progressed.

The proposed Cush substation and grid route is located on agricultural land and was selected for a number of reasons, including

- The site is well located for connection to the existing national grid infrastructure

- The site does not include any environmental designations, such as Natural Heritage Areas or Areas of Conservation
