Big Questions, Bright Futures: Talking Renewable Energy at St. Broghan's NS

Helping young people understand renewable energy is about much more than explaining how a wind turbine works—it's about encouraging curiosity, answering questions and showing how today's students could become tomorrow's engineers, technicians and environmental leaders.
We recently had the pleasure of visiting St. Broghan's National School to meet with students and discuss renewable energy, wind energy and the proposed plans for the local area. The visit provided a fantastic opportunity to have an open and engaging conversation with pupils about the role renewable energy plays in Ireland's future and how local communities are involved throughout the development process.
Throughout the session, students learned how wind turbines capture the power of the wind to generate clean electricity, explored the different parts of a turbine and discovered how wind farms are monitored around the clock from a dedicated control centre. We also spoke about the many careers within the renewable energy industry, highlighting that opportunities extend far beyond engineering to include environmental science, ecology, planning, communications and community engagement.
One of the highlights of the morning was introducing the students to the specialist climbing equipment used by wind turbine technicians. Seeing the harnesses, helmets and safety gear up close sparked plenty of questions and gave pupils an insight into the extensive training and safety procedures that are essential when working in the industry. It was a great way to demonstrate that safety is always the number one priority on every wind farm. They even tried them on!
The students' enthusiasm was evident throughout the visit. They asked thoughtful questions, shared their own ideas about renewable energy and were eager to learn more about how wind energy can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
To round off the visit, we held a prize presentation to recognise the students' participation and engagement.
Winners received Smyths Toys vouchers along with our popular "Build a Wind Turbine" educational kits, giving them the chance to continue exploring renewable energy through hands-on learning long after the presentation had finished.
