Helping Young Minds Bloom at Aughadreena National School

At Carrickallen Wind Farm, we are proud to support projects that leave a lasting legacy for local communities. Through the Carrickallen Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund, we were delighted to support Aughadreena National School in creating its Blooming Minds Garden for Holistic Wellbeing – a space designed to promote wellbeing, creativity and a love of nature.
The project transformed an underused area at the front of the school into a colourful and welcoming garden where pupils can relax, read, chat with friends or simply enjoy some quiet time away from the busy playground. Designed as a peaceful retreat, the garden provides an alternative outdoor space that supports children's wellbeing while encouraging mindfulness and positive social interaction.
A key feature of the project is the vibrant mural, created with the involvement of pupils, parents, staff and a local artist. Inspired by local folklore, Irish myths and legends, the artwork celebrates the area's rich heritage while allowing children to contribute their own ideas and creativity. The completed mural has quickly become a source of pride, with pupils excited to point out the sections they helped design and paint.
The project was made possible through the combined efforts of the school community, with parents and children working together to help create the garden and transform the school entrance into a bright, colourful and welcoming space.
Reflecting on the completed project, Eilish Smith said:
"We have completed work in the garden area at the front of the school, with the assistance of parents and children. We have also completed a mural at the front of the school. The children are already enjoying the mural area. It helps them to connect with local folklore, Irish myths and legends and their heritage. They take great pride in pointing out the parts that they designed or painted. Their creativity and problem-solving skills have been enhanced through this project, and evidence of their achievement will be there for years to come. Both of these projects have greatly improved the school environment, providing a stimulating and colourful entry to the school. They have made children more aware of their environment and heritage. The funding provided has been invaluable in allowing us to carry out this work."
The Blooming Minds Garden will benefit pupils, families, staff and the wider community for many years to come, creating a peaceful space where children can connect with nature, build friendships and develop a sense of pride in their school and local heritage.
Congratulations to everyone at Aughadreena National School whose enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork brought this wonderful project to life. We are delighted that the Carrickallen Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund has helped support such a meaningful initiative for the whole school community.
