Strengthening Ireland’s Energy Security Through e-Fuels Investment
Ireland’s reliance on imported fossil fuels continues to expose the country to global energy volatility. Recent fluctuations in international oil markets have once again highlighted the need for long-term, sustainable solutions that enhance energy security while supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources. At Galetech Group, we believe that greater investment in emerging technologies such as e-Fuels can play a critical role in reducing Ireland’s dependence on imported oil and strengthening domestic energy resilience.
Ireland’s Exposure to Global Energy Markets
Ireland is among the most energy import-dependent countries in Europe. As a result, domestic fuel prices are heavily influenced by international commodity markets. When global oil prices rise, the impact is felt across transport, industry, and households.
While short-term policy measures can help stabilise consumer costs, long-term energy security requires structural solutions. Reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels is essential to improving resilience and supporting a more sustainable energy future.
What Are e-Fuels?

e-Fuels are synthetic alternatives to conventional fossil fuels, produced using renewable electricity, water and captured CO₂. These fuels, including e-diesel and e-kerosene, are compatible with existing engines and infrastructure.
This makes them particularly suitable for sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as:
Aviation
Maritime transport
Heavy-duty transport
Industrial applications
By converting renewable electricity into transportable fuels, e-Fuels provide a pathway to decarbonise these sectors while enhancing energy security.

Leveraging Ireland’s Renewable Resources
Ireland has significant renewable energy potential, particularly from wind and solar generation. At times, renewable electricity production exceeds demand. Converting this excess energy into e-Fuels offers an opportunity to store renewable power in fuel form and reduce reliance on imported energy sources.
Producing e-Fuels domestically could:
Reduce exposure to global oil price volatility
Improve long-term energy security
Support decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify sectors
Create new clean energy value chains in Ireland
Ireland’s First e-Fuels Pilot Facility
Galetech Group has commenced enabling works on Ireland’s first e-Fuels production and research facility. Located at the company’s Edrans wind farm near Cootehill, Co Cavan, the pilot-scale project will test the viability of producing renewable synthetic fuels using domestic renewable energy.

The facility is expected to:
Produce approximately 100 tonnes of e-Fuel in its first year
Scale to a maximum capacity of 286 tonnes
Support research and validation for commercial deployment
This initiative represents the first step in a long-term strategy to develop e-Fuel production capabilities in Ireland and international markets.
Supporting a Long-Term Energy Strategy
Investment in e-Fuels should be viewed as complementary to electrification and other renewable technologies. Together, these solutions can form a balanced approach to energy security and decarbonisation.

Keith Byrne, Implementation Manager at Galetech e-Fuels, commented:
“Ireland’s overdependence on imported fossil fuels has once again been highlighted by recent volatility in global oil markets. New technologies such as e-Fuels can allow Ireland to reduce its need for imported fossil fuels while strengthening energy security.”
A Call for Greater Investment
Ireland’s renewable energy resources present a clear opportunity to produce sustainable fuels domestically. Increased investment in technologies such as e-Fuels can help reduce import dependence, improve resilience, and support the country’s transition to a cleaner energy future.
At Galetech Group, we are committed to investing in innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and secure energy system. By advancing e-Fuels technologies, Ireland can take meaningful steps toward improving energy independence while supporting climate goals.
